What Are Dermal Fillers?
As skin ages, many people lose facial volume due to loss of fat, collagen, or bone. Dermal fillers are unique injectable treatments to address the early signs of aging, including plumping the skin to reduce the appearance of lines, wrinkles, or facial folds and restore lost volume. Fillers help rejuvenate your skin to refresh your contours and restore your youthful appearance.
Injectable fillers are a semi-permanent way to provide an immediate non-surgical cosmetic enhancement to the face and body.
Many fillers are safe for most patients as they are comprised of hyaluronic acid (HA)—a substance that occurs naturally in the body. HA draws moisture into the deeper layers of the skin, restoring hydration to plump the skin. Most fillers encourage natural collagen production to further improve the skin’s overall appearance and health.
Dermal filler injections typically take 30 to 45 minutes and may offer immediate results. Some fillers provide results that take a few weeks to develop for a gradual, subtle outcome. Depending on the filler type, treated area, and your body’s unique metabolism, results may last 3 to 18 months.
There is a high patient satisfaction rate associated with injectable fillers because results can be seen immediately and they do not involve surgery or lots of downtime.
What Can Dermal Fillers Address?
With many versatile formulas, fillers can enhance many facial features. Dermal fillers can improve the appearance of lines and wrinkles and increase deflated or naturally small lips. With subtle results, fillers can enrich the appearance of:
- Cheek augmentation
- Chin augmentation
- Nasolabial folds
- Fine lines throughout the face
- Deep wrinkles throughout the face
- Facial folds
- Lip augmentation to add fullness
- Vertical lip lines or “smokers lines” around the mouth
- Minimization of the “jowl” appearance along the jaw line
- Marionette lines (lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin)
- Downturned smile
- Cheek fullness
- Chin symmetry and shape
- Filling of the temple depressions on the sides of the face
- Volume loss on the top of the hands
- HIV-related lipodystrophy
- Lines on the chest and between the breasts
- Scar augmentation for hypertrophic scars
Injectable fillers are FDA-approved to be injected into areas that have been extensively studied in clinical trials. There are other areas of the face and body that are frequently and safely treated with fillers in clinical practice, some of which are considered “off-label”. We offer injectable dermal filler treatment for both “on-label” and “off-label” areas, with safety and patient satisfaction being our utmost priorities.
Dermal fillers, along with neuromodulators like Botox® and Jeuveau, are an integral part of non-surgical facelifts.

- Not be pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have realistic expectations and a positive outlook
- Understand the risks and benefits
Preparing for Your Injectable Treatment
It is essential to be in good physical and mental health before any plastic surgery procedure, whether surgical or non-surgical. While each dermal filler procedure will be unique and tailored to your needs, here is some general information to help you get prepared.
- Be selective when choosing your dermal filler injector. Not all injectors are trained equally. Board-certified and internationally trained, Dr. Szpalski has received extensive education in anatomy to ensure she delivers natural-looking results for every patient.
- If you currently smoke, vape, or use nicotine products, you should quit. As smoking is detrimental to your health, especially during recovery from any plastic surgery procedure, patients should stop smoking at least one week before and after injectable treatments. Smoking, vaping, or using any nicotine product can greatly impact the longevity of your dermal filler results. Dr. Szpalski orders a nicotine test for all patients who smoke to help avoid complications caused by smoking or the use of nicotine products.
- For a week before and after your filler procedure, refrain from taking medications, vitamins, and supplements that are not medically necessary as they may increase bleeding or bruising risks. Avoid supplements that contain fish oils, ginseng, vitamin E, garlic, and ginkgo biloba.
- Avoid alcohol or caffeine for about a week as they can cause additional bleeding and bruising.
- Come to your appointment with clean, moisturized skin.
For your comfort, we offer options for the management of discomfort related to the injection process. If you have special requests or questions/concerns about pain related to the injection process, please discuss this with Dr. Szpalski during your consultation.
We advise all our patients that with any injectable treatment, there is the possibility of bruising or redness on the skin, so please plan accordingly. It is best to schedule any injectable treatment at least 2 weeks prior to any important event for which you would like to look your best to allow any swelling or skin discoloration to subside.
Injectable Filler Procedure Overview
On the day of your injectable procedure, you’ll meet with Dr. Szpalski to review the details of your treatment and answer any final questions. Dermal filler injections are typically well-tolerated. You may be treated with a topical numbing agent to ensure your comfort. Many fillers contain lidocaine to further reduce discomfort following treatment.
Dr. Szpalski will strategically administer your dermal filler injections with fine needles in only the areas necessary to refresh your appearance and plump your skin. Most patients report that filler injections are quick and painless with minimal discomfort. Depending on the number of treatment areas, dermal filler procedures take approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
Dermal Filler Recovery
Dermal filler treatments do not require downtime. As such, patients can resume most normal activities immediately. Many patients experience mild redness or swelling at the injection site. However, these effects should resolve in a few hours to days. To alleviate discomfort, patients may use ice packs on the treated area.
After your dermal filler treatment, it is important to thoroughly adhere to Dr. Szpalski’s post-procedural instructions to ensure optimal results. There are a few activities to avoid, including:
- Applying makeup for 24 hours
- Touching the treatment area for up to 12 hours
- Sun or heat exposure for 24 hours
- Exercise or other strenuous activities for 48 hours
- Consuming alcohol or smoking for 48 hours
- Sleeping on your sides the first night
Depending on the filler and location, you might begin to see your dermal filler results immediately. However, some fillers develop more gradually, revealing subtle, natural-looking results after several weeks.
The longevity of your unique dermal filler results depends on several factors, including the product used, treatment location, optimal placement, and your body’s metabolic response.
How Soon Will I See My Dermal Filler Results?
After a dermal filler treatment, many patients see immediate visible improvements to their features, depending on the filler type and location. As such, the skin in the treated area will look plumper and more refreshed to achieve your final results.
Dermal fillers provide temporary results that can last from 3 to 18 months, depending on the filler type and treated area. However, each patient will experience varied results based on optimal placement and unique response. Follow-up treatments are required to maintain your optimal results.
How Much Do Dermal Fillers Cost in New Jersey?
New Jersey dermal filler costs can vary by patient based on individual needs and goals, treatment areas, product used, and the number of units required. During your consultation, Dr. Szpalski will determine the scope of your procedure and estimate your dermal filler cost in New Jersey.
